"The Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake is one of Nepal's most adventurous and rewarding treks. The journey boasts rich Himalayan flora and fauna, varied climates, stunning waterfalls and rivers, traditional Nepali villages, breathtaking landscapes and mountain views, diverse culture, deep gorges, holy temples, a gorgeous alpine lake, and a high mountain pass."

The Annapurna Circuit trek is one of the classic and popular trekking destinations. On the other hand, Tilicho Lake is the highest lake in the world and is accessible on the Annapurna Circuit route. Combining these two treks together makes an ultimate expedition in the Himalayas.

The trek starts with a long drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani via Besisahar. More than half of the road is pitched, so the ride will be comfortable. After Dumre, we’ll drive on an uneven road to Besisahar.

Here, we will switch our vehicle and use an offroad-compatible four-wheeler to drive to Dharapani. We will start walking from Dharapani village. The trail goes along the Marsyangdi River, following the forests and valleys.

We will see gorgeous waterfalls and rivers along the way. There will be several exciting suspension bridges and wooden bridge crossings over gushing rivers. After Dharapani, we will spend nights in Chame, Upper Pisang, and Manang villages.

We have an acclimatization day in Manang that involves hiking to Ice Lake. As you go further into the trek, the vegetation becomes sparse, and you will hike above the treeline. The detour to Tilicho Lake involves walking on landslide-prone areas and glacial tracks.

This part of the trail is quite demanding and requires extra care. After the Tilicho Lake excursion, you will rejoin the Annapurna Circuit and ascend to Yak Kharka. Now, you will trek through alpine meadows and follow a steep, narrow path to Thorong Phedi via Ledar.

Thorong Phedi is the last settlement before Thorong La Pass. You may also spend the night at High Camp instead of Thorong Phedi. High Camp is situated a couple hundred meters above Thorong Phedi. Crossing

Thorong La Pass is the most difficult part of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trekking. It requires around 9 to 10 hours of tough walking. You will reach up to 5,416 meters above sea level. The high altitude, thin air, and low oxygen level make every step challenging.

The hard walk rewards you with one of the best mountain panoramas from the top of the pass. You will be mesmerized, and all your long hours and efforts will become meaningful. The trail then descends from the pass and crosses landslide debris and rocky outcrop on the way to Muktinath Temple.

Muktinath is a pilgrimage site in Nepal. The temple holds religious significance for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Leaving Muktinath, you will trek through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.

It is the last day of the trek and takes you to Jomsom village. In this part of the trail, you will enjoy arid landscapes, giant rocks, and lush meadows. The trek ends in Jomsom, and you will drive to Pokhara.

Take this opportunity to explore Pokhara, the second most famous tourist city in Nepal. The following day, you will drive back to Kathmandu.

Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake difficulty

  • Strenuous (one of the most challenging treks in Nepal)
  • Daily minimum walking hours: 6 hours
  • Suitable for beginners? No. Previous high altitude experience and strong fitness are a must.

The Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake is considered one of the most demanding treks in Nepal due to the offbeat terrain, steep ascents and descents, high altitude, long walking hours, and remoteness of the region.

The trail between Khangsar and Tilicho Lake is tricky, steep, and narrow. You have to be cautious while navigating this part of the trek, which involves rocky tracks, glacier walking, and even walking on the snow.

Likewise, crossing Thorong La Pass is another big challenge on the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek. Thorong La is the highest pass in Nepal, and crossing it is like climbing a peak. You will walk around 9 to 10 hours to cross the pass while traversing a steep, rocky route.

Some other factors that make the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake strenuous are mentioned below:

  • High altitude: High altitude makes trekking difficult because of low oxygen levels. It also carries the risk of altitude sickness and potentials like fatigue and headache, which may impact your journey. If you ascend too quickly, you are more prone to these problems, so take your time and enjoy the trip. Acclimatization is important.
  • Offbeat terrain: Offbeat terrains are steep and rocky in many sections. Trekkers have to put more effort and care while navigating offbeat terrain, so strong fitness is required. Likewise, ascending and descending on offbeat terrain is physically and mentally very demanding. You cannot negotiate your fitness.
  • Trek duration: The trek duration and daily walking hours also highly determine the overall difficulty of a trek in the Himalayas. The longer you stay in the mountains, the longer you walk and have to adjust to limited services. The Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake involves 10 days of walking, and each day, you will walk 6 to 7 hours on average, which is quite a lot.
  • Varying environment: Many trekkers underestimate the effect of changing elevations and exposure to varying environments. These directly affect your body and mood. The higher you hike, the more the vegetation will become sparse, and the climate will get cold. The lushness will fade into bareness, and some trekkers may find its typical rugged landscapes a bit saddening. So, mentally, you have to be ready to embrace all shades of nature.

Who can do the Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Lake trek?

How to prepare for the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake?

Annapurna Circuit is famous, and many trekkers are attracted to its adventure and beauty. But little do they know that this trek is not as easy as it seems in pictures and videos. In fact, the Annapurna Circuit trek, with or without Tilicho Lake, is one of the most challenging treks in the world.

So, trekkers have to be fit to do this trek and also possess previous high-altitude experience. If you are going to do the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake, you must prepare before the trek starts to ensure you are ready to handle the challenges of this incredible trek.

Please follow the below tips to prepare for the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake:

  • Get strong: To traverse mountainous terrain, you have to get strong. Your core will be highly involved during the trek, and you will need to push yourself a lot. Strength training is highly recommended.
  • Improve your stamina and endurance: You need excellent stamina and endurance to walk 6 hours a day for 10 days at high altitudes and rugged terrain. If you get your breath just climbing a couple of stories, you are not fit for the Annapurna Circuit.
  • High-altitude exposure: If this is your first time experiencing high altitude, please consider a few day hikes or short treks before starting the Annapurna Circuit Tilicho Lake trek. Previous high-altitude experience increases the trek's success rate for you.
  • Research the trekking region and set the right expectations: Himalayan trails are different from other mountain ranges. They are remote, only accessible by walking, and have unpredictable weather conditions. The more you know the trekking region, the fewer disappointments you will have, and it will be easier to adjust and enjoy the trek.

From Chame, we will hike to Upper Pisang, following a steep, narrow valley. On the way, we will trek past a huge 1500-meter-tall rock called Paungda Danda Rock.

From here, the trail continues along the Marsyangdi River and descends to the Manang Valley floor. We will then ascend to Pisang village. Today, the views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak are outstanding.

There are two routes from Upper Pisang to Manang village. One is the upper route that goes through Geru, which is very scenic. Another route follows lower trails but is not scenic.

We will follow the upper route and gradually ascend, enjoying breathtaking views of mountains like Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Pisang Peak, Tilicho Peak, and Mt. Gangapurna.

We will take an acclimatization break today. Our day activities include hiking to Ice Lake and Praken Gompa early in the morning. After that, we will return to Manang to rest and recover. Manang is a bit of a village, so there are many things to explore and experience here.

We will leave the Annapurna Circuit trail and take a detour to Tilicho Lake. The terrain is much more steep and rocky than the last few days. First, we will descend to a rover and cross it. The trail goes through coniferous forests.

We will walk for around three hours to reach Khangsar. From here, the trail goes through Siri Kharka and ascends to Tilicho Base Camp. There is no settlement on the way. While hiking, we can see striking views of Mt. Chulu, Tilicho Peak, and Gungang Himal.

The day starts early. We will leave Tilicho Base Camp and hike to Tilicho Lake. Depending on the weather conditions, we have to walk on snow. After a few hours of walking, we will see the gorgeous turquoise-blue color of Tilicho Lake.

It will be a very peaceful moment. We will spend some time here soaking the view and the serenity. After that, we will trek back to Tilicho Base Camp and descend to Siri Kharka to spend the night.

Following the same track, we will walk back to Khangsar village. From here, we will walk downhill and follow a rocky route to Yak Kharka. On the way, we will visit the Tare Gumba Monastery and also cross alpine meadows.

Thorong Phedi is the last village before Thorong La Pass. From Yak Kharka, the trail ascends to Ledar, following a narrow uphill track. From here, we will continue hiking to Thorong Phedi for the night. We will enjoy beautiful, rugged scenery.

*Note: Some trekkers also prefer to ascend to High Camp to spend the night. It is less bustling than Thorong Phedi.

Today, we will cross the Thorong La Pass. From Thorong Phedi, we will first hike to High Camp. The trail then steeply ascends to the top of the pass, which will welcome us with breathtaking mountain vistas.

We will cross the pass before midday to avoid strong winds. From the top of the pass, the trail descends through landslide debris and takes us to Muktinath, one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Nepal.

It is the last day of our trek. We will walk from Muktinath Temple to Jomsom village. The trail passes through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. We will also pass by Kagbeni village.

On this day, we will take a scenic early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. The remaining day is free in Pokhara. You can rest and visit tourist sites like Davis Falls, Begnas Lake, Gupteshwor Cave, and Phewa Lake. You can also buy souvenirs.

Following the same route, we will drive back to Kathmandu, so the ride will be comfortable and scenic. Upon reaching Kathmandu, the guide will drop us off at the hotel and help us check in. The remaining day is free. Explore Thamel and window shop in the evening.

Essential Information

The ideal time to do the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake

We best enjoy the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake between March and April (spring) and late September and November (autumn). These months have neither too hot nor too cold a climate, which makes trekking incredible.

Likewise, the weather is excellent in these months, with stunning mountain views and scenery. The toughest sections on this trek are reaching Tilicho Lake and crossing Thorong La Pass. To reach both these destinations, weather and trail conditions must be favorable, and spring and autumn will not let you down.

On the other hand, June to August (summer/monsoon) and December to February (winter) do not have favorable weather, climate, or trails to do the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake trek. So, these two seasons are called the offseason.

You might be wondering if it is impossible to do this trek in summer/monsoon and winter. It depends on the trail conditions and whether Thorong La Pass is navigable. If it is, we can also organize the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake in the off-season.

Note that the trek challenges increase in the offseason, so you must be more patient and include 1-2 contingency days in your itinerary.

Altitude sickness and prevention

Altitude sickness is a common affair during the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake. Some trekkers may suffer from it, some not. It depends on how strategically your Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake itinerary is planned.

For instance, our itinerary includes a rest day in Manang village and maintains a good pace throughout the trek. Our guide also ensures you do not ascend quickly and follow other high-altitude precautions.

If you have previous high-altitude experience, you are less likely to suffer from altitude sickness because it allows you to acclimatize to high altitude quickly. Be mindful of the below tips, and you will be fine during the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trekking:

  • High-altitude experience: Get high-altitude experience before joining this trek. You can do day hikes or beginner-friendly treks. It will also help you prepare physically and mentally for the Annapurna Circuit.
  • Ascend slowly: Ascend slowly during trekking and take frequent breaks if needed. You will get tired, but you must protect yourself from extreme exhaustion. We highly recommend not pushing yourself unnecessarily.
  • Hydration: Hydration is a secret to avoid altitude sickness. Drink two liters of water daily. Avoid high caffeine intake, and do not consume alcohol or smoke while ascending. These things dehydrate your body and increase the risks of altitude sickness.
  • Awareness of early signs of altitude sickness: Altitude sickness does not happen directly. You will see symptoms like a bad headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, insomnia, light-headedness, etc. Be aware of these signs and get first aid immediately if you see them. The early signs are easy to cure.
  • Listen to your body: Your condition has to be good during trekking. Listen to your body and do as it says. If you need a break, do not hesitate to let your guide know. It is fine to follow your pace and not compete with other trekkers in your group. It ensures your satisfaction and success.

Accommodation during the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek

The accommodation on the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake is a tea house. The trail goes through several villages where you will spend nights in tea houses runned by locals. It is a simple accommodation that involves shared rooms, a washroom, and a dining space.

You are most likely to share a room with a fellow trekker. If you are uncomfortable, you can upgrade to single rooms, paying extra money. There may not be a single room in settlements like Siri Kharka, Ledar, Thorong Phedi, and High Camp.

Western-style toilets are available in many villages but may be lacking in some settlements at upper altitudes. So, you may have to use a squat toilet. Trekkers should pack things like toilet paper, handwash, sanitizer, etc.

Likewise, a high-quality sleeping bag is also recommended for the Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake trek. It will help you cope with the cold climate at night. Blankets provided in tea houses may not be enough.

Services like charging, WiFi, and hot showers are available in almost all villages but cost extra money. These are your personal expenses, so kindly carry some money while trekking. You can expect to spend USD 5 to USD 15 per day.

Three meals a day while trekking

Thanks to the popularity of the Annapurna Circuit, many trekkers do this trek every year, which has heavily commercialized the trekking route. You can find many Asian and Western dishes along the trail. You will have meals in tea houses.

They cook fresh food upon your order. Although the menu is quite extensive, some top recommendations are dal bhat, momo, thukpa, thenduk, porridge, fried rice, and stew. These dishes are filling, nutritious, and delicious.

In addition, you will also have options like pasta, noodles, curries, soups, steak, pizza, burgers, etc. Similarly, the beverage menu includes a variety of teas and coffee. Ginger honey tea is very famous and helps people acclimate.

Likewise, you will also find local wines and beer along the trail but do not consume them while ascending. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, we only provide breakfast in the hotel where you spend the night.

As there are options around the world in these cities, we do not want our guests to be forced to eat in our partnered restaurants and cafes.

Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake travel insurance

Travel insurance is necessary for high-altitude treks like the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake. It provides financial backup during emergencies and allows you to receive quick rescue if needed.

We do not have a proper travel insurance service for foreigners in Nepal, so kindly buy it in your country and begin the documents with you. Make sure it covers emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills.

Guide and porter

Guide and porter are essential for the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake. They make the trek achievable, guarantee your safety, and ensure you do not miss out on any experience. You will enjoy every moment of the journey and have a great time.

The best thing about trekking with a guide and porter is all the insights and stories you learn. They also help you interact with the locals and make the trip memorable. At times, your on-field crew will also motivate you to push.

Porters help with duffel bags. Trekking with a heavy bag is not attainable even for the strongest trekkers, so porters are essential for making treks like the Annapurna Circuit achievable. One porter carries a duffel bag for two trekkers. Each trekker has an 8 to 9 kg weight limit.

Tips are the best way to thank your guide and porter after their service. It is also customary to tip your guide and porter. So, kindly budget it. You can tip 20% to 25% of the package cost or whatever amount you find acceptable.
