"When we talk about the Upper Mustang trek, we talk about a magical journey to a hidden kingdom in the northern Himalayas of Nepal. The Upper Mustang trek is not like your usual trek in Nepal. It is an adventurous voyage in the rain shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trek goes beyond adventure and explores ancient Tibetan Buddhist heritage and centuries-old monasteries."

Upper Mustang is a semi-autonomous region bordering Tibet. Lo Manthang is the capital of Upper Mustang and is known as the Walled City. Even after the demolition of the monarchy in 2008 in Nepal, the Upper Mustang practiced their monarchical system and, therefore, became famous as the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal.

Upper Mustang is the epitome of rich Himalayan heritage and untouched archeological significance. The region has monasteries that date more than 1,000 years and many stupas, mani walls, and chortens.

Do you remember we have learned humans used to live in caves attached to cliffs? Yes, you will see one of those caves in Upper Mustang. Travelers looking for a unique trekking experience in Nepal should consider Upper Mustang trekking.

This trek has a unique appeal. Unlike typical green scenery, Upper Mustang features deep gorges, arid cliffs, canyons, semi high altitude desert (2,800 m to 4,000 m), mud houses, and wind-swept plateaus resembling Tibet.

What can you expect during the Upper Mustang trek?

Our Upper Mustang trek itinerary is 16 days long. In this duration, you will leave the bustling cities and noise of the digital world behind and embark on a peaceful and adventurous journey. Mountains, meadows, high cliffs, and canyons will surround you. There will be little to no network or internet.

Witness panoramic views of mountains like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Fishtail, Damodar Hill, Bhrikuti Himal, Hiunchuli, Tukuche Peak, etc. Explore centuries-old monasteries like Namgyal Gompa and hike to Tingkhar, the last village in the northwest. Likewise, discover 1,200-year-old Ghar Gompa and the infamous Sky Caves (Chhoser).

Something new unfolds every day, making the trek truly exciting. The fresh air, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful sunrises, and lovely sunsets will make your journey remarkable. Along with adventure and cultural exploration, you will also unwind and rejuvenate.

Treks like this also help you lose 4-5 kg weight and make you feel confident and positive. Efforts are required, but in return, you will have a life-changing experience during the Upper Mustang trek 16 days.

The history & culture of Upper Mustang

  • Ancient kingdom: Until 2008, Upper Mustang officially practiced monarchy like the rest of Nepal. However, it has its own king. Even after the monarchy was abolished in 2008, the locals of Upper Mustang continued to follow the monarchy system in their region, making it an ancient kingdom.
  • Tibetan Buddhism: The proximity to Tibet has allowed locals to share and adapt Tibetan culture, beliefs, and practices over the centuries. Tibetan Buddhism is dominant in the Upper Mustang.
  • Ancient monasteries: Home to Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lhakhang, Chyodi Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, Ghar Gomwpa, Luri Gompa (BonPo), and many other monasteries.
  • Tiji festival: It is the biggest festival celebrated by the locals of Upper Mustang. The festivals celebrate the victory of good over evil and bring the locals together. Tiji festivals last three days and showcase the rituals, mask dances, offerings, and legends that have remained a core part of the local's lives.
  • Local lifestyle: The way people live in Upper Mustang in this day and age is truly mesmerizing. You will feel like you have traveled back in time. There is a mix of traditional mud-brick houses and narrow alleys. Yak herding, horses, and salt trade routes are still a huge part of the lives of the locals.

Why is the Upper Mustang a restricted area in Nepal for foreigners?

Upper Mustang was once forbidden to enter, and only a few foreigners have entered this region for research or official visits. The region only opened for outsiders in 1992 but with a restricted area status. Why a restricted area? Read below:

  • Historical significance: When the rest of Nepal united as one kingdom, Upper Mustang remained a separate kingdom. The history here is different and must be protected for the coming generations.
  • Political sensitivity: Shares border with Tibet. In Upper Mustang, you will get very close to the Nepal Tibet border. It is a controlled area and requires stringent security to maintain peace between both nations.
  • Cultural preservation: Modernization has not densely prevailed in Upper Mustang. The villagers are closely tied to their traditions, beliefs, and values, and it is worth preserving them from mass tourism.
  • Archeological values: The architecture in Upper Mustang depicts early human lives, which is rare on Earth today. Likewise, the region has many thousands of-year-old monasteries, stupas, and mani walls. Many sky caves remain undiscovered because of their unstable foundation.

Is this trek suitable for you?

The Upper Mustang trek is moderately difficult because you walk 6 hours a day minimum. It is a tea house trek, so accommodation and meals are simple. You also spend the night in monasteries in some villages.

The terrain is offbeat and crosses multiple mountain passes under 4,300 meters. So, trekkers have to be in good shape to do this trek. Can beginner trekkers do the Upper Mustang trek? It depends on their fitness and endurance.

Unlike the famous treks such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and Langtang Valley, the Upper Mustang trek route is not that established in terms of tourist infrastructure, which requires trekkers to adjust a lot in addition to offbeat terrain.

Explore the Himalayas on a jeep/bike in Nepal

The above phrase may not sound real, but it is. The Upper Mustang is the only Himalayan region in Nepal that you can travel in a vehicle. We have an Upper Mustang Jeep tour package and an Upper Mustang bike tour package. You can choose the vehicle of your choice.

It is a perfect option for travelers who are bound by time or do not want to trek. During the jeep or bike tour, you will follow the same route but may spend nights in different villages.

How to prepare for Upper Mustang trekking?

  • No need for extraordinary fitness: You do not need extraordinary fitness to do the Upper Mustang trek. The basic requirement is 5 to 6 hours of walking a day. If you can push yourself to walk these hours, you can do this trek.
  • Previous trek experience: Previous trekking experience will help you greatly on this trek. It will be easier for you to adapt to the high altitude and remote Himalayan environment.
  • Strength and stamina: If you are not in a rush and have ample time to improve your strength and stamina before starting the trek. We highly recommend exercising regularly. Be consistent and include some kind of movement daily.
  • Exercise: Walking is highly recommended. You can go on a few day hikes. Likewise, cardio activities such as cycling, swimming, and running are also great ways to build stamina and endurance.

Upper Mustang Trek - 16 Days Itinerary

Our team will be available at Kathmandu's international airport on your arrival day to welcome you to Nepal and drop you off at the hotel. You will be staying in Thamel, a tourist hub in Kathmandu.

In the evening, we will meet for a trip briefing and introduce you to your guide. Spend the remaining evening shopping for the trek and enjoying the bustle of Kathmandu.

Like the Everest region, which is easily accessible from Kathmandu with a short Lukla flight, the Mustang region is easily accessible from Pokhara with a short Jomsom flight. Therefore, traveling to Pokhara is a must for the Upper Mustang trek.

The road between Kathmandu and Pokhara is pitched, so the ride is quite comfortable. The highway goes along lush green hills and rivers. During the drive, you will also see beautiful views of snow-capped mountains and waterfalls.

You will reach Pokhara by mid-afternoon. The rest of the day is free. If you want to rent any trekking gear, do it today. Explore Phewa Lake and the Lakeside Market.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast and drive to Pokhara's domestic airport. You will take a morning flight to Jomsom. The flight will be short but very scenic. The aerial views of the Himalayan mountains are to die for.

Land in Jomsom and fetch your duffel bags. Here, porters will join your group and help you with duffel bags. Leaving Jomsom, you will trek to Kagbeni. The trail goes through narrow alleys and exposed cliff sides.

Today, we will enter Upper Mustang, which is a restricted area in Nepal. The permits are registered at the police check post at the very start of Upper Mustang. We will walk through the narrow alleys of Kagbeni and follow the rugged hillsides to Chele. The trail also goes through barley and buckwheat fields.

We will begin the day very early because we have to cross two mountain passes under 3,000 meters on this day. As we hike from Chele to Syanbochen, we will cross Taklam La Pass (3,624 m/11,890 ft) and Darjori La Pass (3,735 m/12,254 ft).

Even though the passes are not that high, we will enjoy beautiful landscapes. The trail then goes through Samar village and steeply ascends to Syanbochen.

From Syanbochen, we will trek to Ghami village. It will be another long day of walking, but the stunning arid landscapes and striking mountain views will fuel our energy.

Leaving Syanbochen, we will gradually ascend to Yamada La (3,850 m/12,631 ft). From here, we will continue trekking through small settlements and pass by chortens and barley fields. The trail then ascends to Nyi La pass (4,010 m/13,156 ft) and descends to Ghami.

From Ghami onwards, the trail gets even steeper and more rugged. First, you will descend to Ghami Khola and cross the river using a suspension bridge. As you trek further, you can see mani walls.

Follow a rugged track and ascend to Tsarang La Pass (3,870 m/12,697 ft). The view from the top is amazing. Then, trek to Tsarang Chu Canyon, where Tsarang village is located.

On this day, we will reach Lo Manthang, the last forbidden kingdom in Nepal. The trail drops down from Tsarang village. We have to be careful because the terrain is steep. We will cross a river and follow a steep, rocky uphill route to Lo La pass (3,950 m/12,959 ft).

From Lo La Pass, you can see the aerial view of Lo Manthang and the surrounding mountains, such as Annapurna I, Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, and Bhrikuti Peak. We will descend from the pass and trek to Lo Manthang village, following a long mani wall.

Today is the rest day in Lo Manthang, which means you will spend one more day in this village. After having breakfast, get ready to go on a short excursion to nearby places.

We will hike to Namgyal Gompa. It is the most important religious center for locals in Upper Mustang. After that, we will hike northwest to Tingkhar, the last village in the area.

Then, we will hike to Chhoser Caves, also known as Sky Caves. It is believed that humans lived in these caves thousands of years ago. Because of the cave's instability, many of its chambers remain undiscovered.

Likewise, in Lo Manthang village, we will explore Champa Lhakhang, Thugchen Gompa, the Entrance Hall, and Chyodi Gompa. You will also have ample time to spend with locals and observe their daily lives.

You will leave Lo Manthang and hike to Dhakmar. The trail mostly descends and passes by small remote settlements. We will stop at Ghar Gompa, which is over 1,200 years old. After exploring this ancient monastery, we will continue trekking to Dhakmar, relishing peaceful arid landscapes.

Leaving Dhakmar, we will trek back to Syanbochen. We will cross many streams and a few stunning waterfalls on the way. The trail goes through Samar and retraces the same path back to Syanbochen. Along the way, we will enjoy outstanding views of Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Nilgiri, and Mt. Dhaulagiri.

The trail descends from Syanbochen to Chhuksang. Vast meadows, barren landscapes, high cliffs, and unique rocks will accompany us along the trail. Even though we will follow the same path, the views will seem new.

It is the last day of the trek. We will hike down to Jomsom. From Chhuksang, the trail first descends to Kagbeni village through rugged cliff sides. On the way, we will walk through beautiful white-washed houses and pass by the narrow alleys of Kagbeni. The trail from Kagbeni to Jomsom is the same as before.

An early morning flight will take us back to Pokhara. The guide will drop you off at the hotel. You can spend the rest of the day resting and exploring the city. Visit local markets and tourist sites.

On this day, we will drive back to Kathmandu. It will be a lovely, comfortable journey. Upon reaching Kathmandu, the guide will drop you off at the hotel.

You can spend the remaining day as you wish. Today is also your last night in Kathmandu, so make sure to indulge in shopping, try Nepali dishes, and visit nearby tourist sites.

After the long adventure, it is time to say goodbye to each other. The trip has ended. Our team will help you with international airport departure.

Essential Information

Upper Mustang trek difficulty

  • Moderate difficulty (easier than Everest, harder than Ghorepani)
  • Daily walking hours: 5-7 hours
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes, with basic fitness

The Upper Mustang trek is considered a moderate-level trek in the Himalayas. However, the terrain is offbeat and involves many steep, rocky sections, so trekkers have to be physically fit.

The region's isolation and arid environment make it different from other trekking regions, adding to its difficulties. In terms of altitude, you will not go above 4,200 meters on this trek, so the risk of altitude sickness is comparatively lower than other treks in Nepal.

The Upper Mustang trek distance is approximately 125 kilometers. During the trek, you can expect 5 to 6 hours of daily ascends and descends. If trekking seems challenging, you can customize the trip to an Upper Mustang jeep tour with us, which is much easier.

The Upper Mustang terrain is like Tibet. Instead of trekking through forests and lush hills, you will pass by canyons, high cliffs, deserts, and narrow gorges. Before reaching Lo Manthang, the trail crosses a handful of passes under 4,200 meters.

Even though the passes are comparatively low altitude, crossing them requires good effort. We do not recommend the Upper Mustang trek to beginner trekkers unless they have good strength and stamina.

Altitude Sickness

High altitude is one of the biggest challenges while trekking in the Himalayas, but the Upper Mustang trek is not that high. Therefore, the risk of altitude sickness is low. Still, trekkers have to acclimatize and ascend slowly.

The highest altitude you will sleep during the Upper Mustang trek is Lo Manthang, at 3,840 meters. However, you will go multiple times above 4,000 meters while crossing different passes on the way to Lo Manthang. All the passes on the Upper Mustang trek route are under 4,200 meters.

Trekkers must be aware of altitude sickness symptoms, why they happen, and how to prevent them so they are on the safe side. First, altitude sickness happens because of low oxygen levels at high elevations, which our bodies are not used to.

So, we trek slowly and spend multiple nights before reaching the highest point of any trek. In the case of the Upper Mustang trek, we hike high and sleep low naturally because of the nature of the trail. So, an acclimatization day is not required before Lo Manthang.

However, trekkers should maintain their pace and stay hydrated throughout the journey. Likewise, the symptoms of altitude sickness are difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, headache, vomiting, nausea, insomnia, and feeling uneasy.

What should you do if you see any of these symptoms? Inform your guide and get first aid. We usually eat Diamox, which effectively handles altitude sickness symptoms. Likewise, sometimes resting, descending to a lower altitude, and eating warm soups is also enough.

Upper Mustang trek permits

Trekkers need to get two permits to do the Upper Mustang trek. The first one is a restricted area permit for Upper Mustang, and the second is the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permit. We have mentioned the cost of both permits below.

  • Restricted Permit Cost: USD 500 per person for the first 10 days and an additional USD 50 per day per person after that
  • ACAP Permit: USD20 per person

*Note: Trekking in a group of two trekkers is necessary. If you are a solo trekker, we can help you find a person or group to join the trek. Another option is to get a ghost RAP permit, which will be issued in someone else's name. The downside of the ghost permit is that you have to pay an additional USD 500 for the restricted area permit, thus USD 1000 in total.

The best time to trek to Upper Mustang

You can do the Upper Mustang trek throughout the year. There are four seasons, and every season has different weather, climate, and trail conditions. The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

These seasons have the most wonderful climate and weather conditions. The trails are in great condition, and the mountain views are stunning. You can also do the Upper Mustang trek in the summer/monsoon season (June to August) because it is a rainshadow area.

Rain does not fall in the Upper Mustang, keeping the region dry. However, you will have to face rainfall and bad road/trail conditions until you enter Upper Mustang. Likewise, the scorching heat makes trekking challenging.

A winter (December to February) trek is also possible, but it may not suit everyone. The upper Mustang gets very cold in winter. The temperature drops below freezing, and the entire region hibernates.

Many locals also descend to lower elevations to spend the season. Hence, most teahouses are closed, and the trails are snow-covered. However, the region's winter landscape, tranquility, and beauty are worth all the challenges.

Accommodation & food during the trek

Upper Mustang is a tea house trek. You will get basic lodging and food service in the tea house. WiFi, charging, and hot showers are available in most tea houses, but they cost extra money. Rooms are small and twin-shared. Single rooms cost a few extra bucks.

Washrooms are common in most tea houses. Western-style toilets are available in many places, but you may also have to use squat toilets. Pack all the necessary toiletries for the trek, including soap, toilet paper, wet tissues, etc.

In food, you will mostly get Nepali and Tibetan dishes with a handful of Western options. You will mainly enjoy dal bhat, thukpa, thenduk, Tibetan bread, burgers, pasta, porridge, stew, soup, pancakes, oats, muesli, bread, eggs, meat dishes, momo, and noodles. The menu is much larger at lower elevations.

Clean drinking water is also available throughout the trail. Tea houses provide boiled water for drinking. We use water purification tablets for double safety. Different kinds of beverages are available as well. Our Upper Mustang trek package provides three meals a day, but you can buy extra food and drinks on your own.

Travel Insurance

Trekking with travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation and medical bills allows you to travel freely and enjoy the trip to the fullest. It is because you know you are protected by travel insurance in case any unseen event arises.

Is it necessary to buy travel insurance for the Upper Mustang trek? Yes, every foreign trekker must buy travel insurance for the Upper Mustang trek, and their insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and medical bills. Without it, you cannot do this trek.

Guide and porter

A licensed guide is a must for the Upper Mustang trek. Because of the region's restricted area status, foreigners are not allowed to enter Upper Mustang without a Nepali guide. By choosing us your Upper Mustang trekking partner, you will trek with a professional, friendly, reliable, and English-speaking guide.

Our guides will help you navigate tough sections on the Upper Mustang trail, handle any emergency, ensure your safety and health, and introduce you to the region and the locals. Similarly, porters also add significant value to your journey. They carry duffel bags for the trekkers, which allows them to walk freely and enjoy nature.

How much should you tip your guide and porter? Is it necessary? Tips are customary in Nepal. Your guide and porter will ask for a tip at the end of the trek. You can tip according to their service, hard work, and satisfaction.
