"The Tsum Valley trek is a trip through the remotest part of the Manaslu region. If you want to explore beyond the famous trekking routes of Nepal, try the Tsum Valley trek!"

Tucked between Shringi Himal in the north, Ganesh Himal in the south, and Boudha Himal and Himalchuli in the west, Tsum is a hidden valley. This trek route was introduced in 2008.

It remains as one of the untouched trekking regions in Nepal and presents pristine beauty and a raw Himalayan experience. Trekking to Tsum Valley is not very difficult.

With decent fitness, good health, and determination, trekkers of all ages can complete the Tsum Valley trek 13 days. The trail follows the famous Manaslu Circuit route for the first few days and diverts from Lokpa village.

You can combine the Tsum Valley trek with the Manaslu Circuit if you want to do both treks.

The population in Tsum Valley is very low, and the locals are very attached to their roots. Though trekking has brought some modern changes to the valley, the villagers still follow their ancient lifestyle and beliefs.

Because of the secluded location of Tsum Valley, traveling here is an adventure, but at the same time, the region also boasts rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. You can see many chortens, prayer flags, mani walls, and stupas all over the trail.

As per the locals, the renowned sage Guru Rinpoche and the Tibetan philosopher Milarepa are believed to have meditated in caves in Tsum Valley. You will visit the Milarepa Piren Phu Cave during the trek.

Mu Gompa is the highest point you will hike to in Tsum Valley. It is a centuries-old monastery and offers a breathtaking mountain panorama. Ranchen Gompa is another significant monastery in Tsum Valley that you can visit while returning from the Nile to Chumling.

Instead of retracing the same trail, you have to take a different route that goes through the Ranchen Gompa. Like the valley and its locals, the landscapes and mountain vistas are also mysterious on this trek.

With the progress of the trail, lush hills open up to arid valleys, glaciers, and tall mountains. During trekking, you can see outstanding views of mountains like Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, Boudha Himal, etc.

If you have 2-3 days extra in your hands and want to touch even the remotest corner, consider hiking to the isolated Ganesh Himal Base Camp. It will be an incredibly adventurous side excursion.

On this 13 days trek, you will not take any domestic flight. The trail's starting and ending points are accessible via roadways.

Is Tsum Valley a restricted area in Nepal?

You will travel close to the Nepal-Tibet border during the Tsum Valley trek, so the region is a restricted area in Nepal for foreigners. Trekkers must secure the restricted area permit for the Manaslu region and trek in a group of at least two trekkers.

The Base Camp Trip will help you obtain the necessary permits for the Tsum Valley trek. Likewise, if you are a solo traveler, we will also find another trekker or a group to join you on the Tsum Valley trekking adventure.

What about the vegetation and wildlife experience during the Tsum Valley trek 13 days?

You will be trekking within the Manaslu Conservation Area during the Tsum Valley trek 13 days. The area has a fragile but diverse ecosystem. The conservation area has over 2000 plants, 201 species of birds, 11 types of forests, and many wildlife.

During the Tsum Valley trek, it is rare to spot wildlife, but sometimes lucky travelers get to see a snow leopard and a red panda. If you love exploring vegetation and different ecosystems, you will enjoy the Tsum Valley trek even more.

Fitness for the Tsum Valley trek

Preparation is the key to successfully completing the trek and enjoying it to the fullest. The better your condition is, the better you will enjoy the trek. So, it is important that you prepare for the trek before starting it.

Though you do not need any advanced preparation plan for the Tsum Valley trek, a consistent workout plan is required to improve your strength, stamina, and endurance.

Start preparing for the trek a few weeks before you fly to Kathmandu. Cardio workouts are highly recommended as they are the best way to improve your stamina. You can aim for 30 to 45 minutes of cardio exercise daily. Activities like swimming, cycling, running, and jogging are great.

With cardio, you also have to incorporate strength training in your routine. It will strengthen your core and leg muscles. Similarly, consider daily long walks with a backpack weighing at least 5 kg and join some day hiking programs around your city.

Prevent altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is something that can happen to trekkers of all ages. It doesn't matter whether you are a fit or not. You may suffer from altitude sickness if you do not have previous high altitude experience and follow a well-planned itinerary.

Follow our tips below to prevent altitude sickness during the Tsum Valley trek. We have also shared tips on how to manage it in case you see symptoms of altitude sickness during the trek.

  • Acclimatization: Acclimatization is one of the most effective ways to avoid altitude sickness during any trek in the Himalayas. It allows your body to gradually get used to the high-altitude environment and ultimately avoid altitude sickness. Our Tsum Valley trek itinerary has one acclimatization day.
  • Maintain your pace: Hike slowly and allow your body to get used to the changing altitude. Do not rush while hiking and do not overexert yourself. Take frequent breaks to catch your breath and listen to your body.
  • Hydration: Hydration is also a very important part in avoiding altitude sickness. You must stay hydrated during the trek. Drink lots of water every day and combine soups and teas in your meals. Carry a hydration bladder during the trek. It makes drinking water easy.
  • Diet: High carbohydrate meals are necessary to hold your energy during long hiking hours. Dal bhat is an excellent meal option. It is a well-balanced meal, cost-effective, and tastes excellent.
  • Altitude sickness symptoms: The early signs of altitude sickness are feeling uneasy, persistent headache, vomiting, nausea, insomnia, difficulty breathing, and loss of appetite. Look out for these signs and reach out for help if you see them.
  • What to do if you see symptoms: Informing your guide should be your first step. Do not take any medicine without your guide's knowledge. Our guides are trained to provide first aid for altitude sickness. They also have firsthand experience. Inform your guide and follow his instructions.

Guide and porter

Trekking with a guide is mandatory during the Tsum Valley trek. In the restricted areas like Tsum Valley, foreigners are not allowed to enter without a guide.

Base Camp Trip will provide a professional mountain guide for the Tsum Valley trek. Likewise, our package also includes porters. You have the option to remove the porter. However, note that you have to carry all your luggage without a porter.

Trekking on steep, rugged terrain with heavy bags is not easy unless you are fit and experienced. So, kindly choose the best option for you.

How much should you tip your guide and porter? Is it necessary?

Tipping the guide and porter is customary in Nepal. It is expected of the trekkers. We do not include tips in our trek package. Trekkers can budget it according to their needs. There is no fixed amount for a tip.

A 15% to 20% of the package cost is a decent tip. Note that the porter does not return to Kathmandu with you, so you can tip them separately or ask your guide to tip the porter appropriately.

Tsum Valley Trek - 13 Days Itinerary

Our team will receive you at the Tribhuvan International Airport and escort you to the hotel. We'll book a hotel in Thamel, which is the tourist hub in Kathmandu.

Upon reaching the hotel, check in to your room and get some rest. We will later catch up during the trek briefing and packing. If you need to purchase anything for the journey, get it today.

You will leave Kathmandu early in the morning and enjoy a tranquil ride out of the city. Following the Prithvi Highway, we will drive west of Kathmandu. The highway offers beautiful scenery.

On the way, we will pass by small towns and reach Arughat. From here, the road is bumpy till Machha Khola. As we drive to Machha Khola, we can see the Budhi Gandaki River and lush hills.

Today is the first day of our trek. Crossing the Tharo Khola river, we will ascend to Khola Beni. The trail then passes by a gorgeous waterfall falling down from a huge rocky hill. As we continue trekking, we will reach Tatopani. Here, we can take a half-hour break to enjoy natural hot springs.

Further, the trail crosses a suspension bridge and a landslide area. We will pass by Doban settlement and climb stone stairs to Thado Bharyang. From here, a short walk will take us to Jagat.

Leaving Jagat, we will enter the restricted region of Manaslu. The trail continues to Salleri village. We will walk along the Budhi Gandaki River and gradually ascend to Philim. The valley opens up as we continue towards Philim.

We will reach Ekle Bhatti and follow a steep trail to Lokpa village. During trekking, we can see beautiful scenery and a stunning view of Mt. Manaslu, Boudha Himal, and Himalchuli.

From Lokpa, we will follow a steep, less-used route that leads to Tsum Valley. If the sky is clear, we can see mesmerizing views of Ganesh Himal and Boudha Himal on the horizon.

The trail first descends to the Lungwa River and then ascends through dense rhododendron and pine forests. There is no settlement on the way from Lokpa to Chumling, so we will carry packed food and enjoy a picnic-style lunch.

Chumling onwards, we will hike to Chhokang Paro. The trail enters the inner Himalayas as we continue ascending. Following the Syar River, we will descend to Domje. It is the biggest settlement in Tsum Valley. We will walk uphill from here following a steep track to Chhokang Paro.

The hiking distance from Chhokang Paro to Nile is short, but we also explore the Milarepa Piren Phu Cave on the way, making the day long. The trail passes by Lamagaon and terraced fields. We can see ancient stupas and chortens on the way.

In the Milarepa Piren Phu Cave, we can see hand-painted Buddhist murals, scripts carved on stones, colorful prayer flags, and other religious artifacts. It will be amazing to see all the religious richness in this remotest corner of the Himalayas. Before arriving at Nile, we will cross a suspension bridge.

We will spend a rest day in Nile. Early in the morning, we will hike to Mu Gompa. It is the highest point reached in Tsum Valley. The hiking route goes through alpine yak pastures and offers trans-Himalayan landscapes.

We can see stunning mountains all around us. Mu Gompa is a very old monastery and the pillar of religious belief in the remote Himalayas. If time allows, we will also visit the Dhephu Doma Gompa.

After a delicious breakfast, we begin descending from Nile. We can follow the same trail back to Chumling or use another route that goes through Rachen Gompa. Rachen Gompa is also a must-visit monastery in the Tsum Valley.

The trail descends through uneven cliffside and lush forests to Chhokang Paro. From here, we will cross a bridge and pass by a few small settlements on the way to Chumling. The mountain views are breathtaking along the way.

Leaving Chumling, we will trek back to Philim. We will descend following the same route. The trail descends through terraced fields and lush forests. We will cross a few suspension bridges on the way and also pass by the stunning Samba Falls. Likewise, the views of Shringi Himal are also phenomenal while descending.

The trail continues to descend through rhododendron and pine forests. We will walk down to Khorla Bensi and pass by a forested route, enjoying tranquility. Further, we will pass by a landslide area and cross the Tharo Khola river on the way to Machha Khola.

Today, we will drive back to Kathmandu. We will enjoy a long, scenic ride. Upon reaching the city, the guide will drop us at the hotel. We have kept the remaining day leisure. You can rest and explore local markets. Window shopping in Thamel is a must because it is your last chance to buy a souvenir.

The trek ends. It is time you return home with pockets full of memories. Get ready to leave the hotel on time. Our representative will drop you at the international airport in Kathmandu.

Essential Information

The ideal time to do the Tsum Valley trek in Nepal

The best time to do the Tsum Valley trek is March to May and late September to November. These months have perfect weather and climate conditions. The mountain views are crystal clear, and the scenery is also very beautiful.

Trekking between June and mid-September is very challenging because of unstable weather. Though the temperature drops at night, and as you ascend, the climate is very hot and humid.

Monsoon rain ruins the trail and makes it prone to landslides. Similarly, trekking between December and February is also challenging because of the cold climate.

Tsum Valley trek difficulty

  • Moderate difficulty (easier than Everest, harder than Ghorepani)
  • Daily walking hours: 6-7 hours
  • Suitable for beginners? Yes, with good fitness

The Tsum Valley trek is considered a strenuous trek in Nepal. Away from the well-established trekking routes in Nepal, Tsum Valley is situated in one of the remotest corners of the Himalayas. The tourist infrastructure is barely there, so you will have a raw Himalayan experience.

It is an offbeat trek. The terrain is steep, rocky, and rugged. Along the way, you will traverse a handful of landslide-prone areas and narrow rocky tracks. The trail constantly goes uphill and downhill, so trekkers have to be in good shape.

Daily walking hours are 6 to 7. You will start trekking from 930 meters and gradually ascend to 3,700 meters. However, the altitude gain is minimal compared to treks like Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. Still, you will face some high-altitude challenges.

Our Tsum Valley trek itinerary is strategically planned to provide ample acclimatization opportunities with a rest day in Nile village. Likewise, we will gradually ascend, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. It is important that trekkers are in good condition and fit to enjoy the journey to the fullest.

Tsum Valley trek permits and regulations 2025

Tsum Valley is a classified area in Nepal for foreigners, so they need a special restricted area permit to enter. In addition to that, you will also need a Manaslu Conservation Area permit. Our Tsum Valley trek package includes both permit fees.

  • Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu (September to November): USD 40 per week per person
  • Restricted Area Permit for Manaslu (December to August): USD 30 per week per person
  • Manaslu Conservation Area permit cost: USD 30 per person

Additional expenses you have to budget for the Tsum Valley

Our Tsum Valley trek package does not include the following expenses, so kindly budget them as per your spending habits:

  • International flights in and out of Nepal
  • Nepal travel visa fees
  • Travel insurance
  • Trekking clothes and gear
  • Tips for the guide and porters
  • Shopping
  • Bar bills and lunch/dinner in Kathmandu
  • Extra food during the trek
  • Expenses like charging, hot showers, and WiFi during the trek
  • You may have to make small donations at the monasteries as per local custom to show your respect
  • Extra nights in Kathmandu
  • Hotel upgrade and private jeep to/from Kathmandu

Kindly budget above expenses. We recommend that trekkers budget USD 15 to USD 20 per day for personal expenses during the trek.

Visa for Nepal

Foreigners have to obtain a Nepali travel visa to enter the country for the Tsum Valley trek or any other travel purpose. Nepal offers an easy on-arrival visa option for travelers.

You can fill in the form only at the Nepal immigration site, print it out, and bring it along with the visa fee, your passport, and a few passport-size photos.

You can check more details about the Nepal travel visa on this site.

*Note: Our Tsum Valley trek package does not include the visa fee.

Accommodation during the Tsum Valley trek

During the Tsum Valley trek, you will stay in simple tea houses. Sleeping rooms are usually shared between the trekkers. There are no attached bathrooms, and squat toilets are normal on this trek route.

You are most likely to experience a local homestay on this trek. Services are limited compared to other famous trekking routes in Nepal. We suggest trekkers carry a solar power bank and extra batteries.

Likewise, we also recommend carrying a sleeping bag and all essential toiletries. For hot showers, you may be charged USD 2 to USD 5. Likewise, you may have to pay up to USD 3 per device for charging.

What will you eat during the Tsum Valley trek?

Like accommodation, the food options are quite limited on the Tsum Valley trek. Therefore, trekkers must carry their favorite snacks and bars to have a better option.

Common dishes on the Tsum Valley trek route are soups, Tibetan bread, chapati, momo, fried noodles, fried potatoes, dal bhat, fried rice, rice pudding, eggs, porridge, Nepali tea, Tibetan butter tea, coffee, soft drinks, local wine, and beer.

*Note:

  1. Kindly refrain from drinking alcohol during the ascent to Mu Gompa. Alcohol dehydrates your body and increases the risk of altitude sickness.
  2. Three meals a day are included in our Tsum Valley trek package, but you can buy more food and drinks on your own. So, carry some money for extra food.
  3. There are better vegetarian options than non-vegetarian ones. Eggs are commonly found everywhere. Meats are limited and mostly frozen. In addition to that, you will also find mountain milk, bread, cheese, ghee, etc.

Drinking water

We drink boiled water during the trek. It costs less and is available in all tea houses along the trail. Bottled water is also available in many places, but it is very expensive and also not good for the environment. We use water purifying tablets for additional safety. You can also buy it in Thamel (Kathmandu) or online.

*Note: Avoid drinking water from the taps during the trek. Not everyone can easily digest mountain water.

Travel insurance for the Tsum Valley trek

Travel insurance is a must for restricted area treks like Tsum Valley. Foreigners are not allowed to enter the region without travel insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills.

Buying travel insurance with necessary coverage for high-altitude treks is not a good choice. The travel insurance options are very limited. So, we request that our guests purchase well-covered travel insurance for the Tsum Valley trek in their country.

Communication on the trek

Once you go beyond Jagat, the mobile network gets very bad. Many parts of the trail have no network, especially the upper Tsum Valley. We recommend you share your itinerary and our contact number with your family. We will let them know your whereabouts during the trek.

Going off-grid is given on the Tsum Valley trek. However, we will stay connected with you through the satellite phone that our guide will carry.
