Among the thousands of mountains in Nepal, Lobuche Peak is one of the famous beginner-friendly peaks that demands little to no technical climbing skills. It is a trekking peak that rises 6,119 meters above sea level.

Even though the technical challenges are low, climbers have to be physically fit and possess a mountain sense. Climbers who want to attempt their first Himalayan peak can consider Lobuche Peak.

Our professional and strong climbing team will help you reach the summit and return safely. You can climb Lobuche Peak in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Lobuche Peak is one of the most accessible mountains in the Himalayas. The ascent is also quite simple but offers exposure to extreme alpine environments, high altitude, and snow walking. So, many climbers love this mountain.

You will follow the Everest Base Camp route up to Lobuche village and climb to Lobuche Peak East Base Camp from there. Many Lobuche Peak climbing itineraries include a hike to EBC, but this one doesn't.

Let us know if you want to hike to EBC before climbing Lobuche Peak. We can customize the itinerary.

The Lobuche Peak climbing is 14-day long. The journey is adventurous, scenic, and immersive. The trip starts with a thrilling Lukla flight. You will then hike through rhododendron forests and Sherpa villages for seven days to reach Lobuche village.

Our Lobuche Peak climbing itinerary includes two rest days before the summit push. It is ample time to acclimate and gear up for climbing. Before the summit push, our mountain guide will also provide climbing training to boost your confidence.

From Lobuche village, the climbing period starts. We set up our tent at Lobuche East Peak High Camp. We have shared more about Lobuche East Peak and Lobuche West Peak below. We will push to the summit from the high camp and descend to Pheriche to spend the night.

You will then trek back to Lukla and take another flight to Kathmandu. This sums up your Lobuche Peak climbing trip. We have shared additional highlights of Lobuche Peak climbing below.

The rare panoramic views of Mount Everest and the overall scenic journey

On the Lobuche Peak climbing, you will see some of the rare views of Mount Everest, which is also not seen during Island Peak climbing. In addition to that, you will see a grand view of the Khumbu Glacier.

As the trail continues from Lukla to Lobuche village, diverse landscapes will unfold. From the lush valleys and rhododendron-covered hills, you will hike through terraced fields and alpine meadows before following the glacier moraine to reach Lobuche village.

Mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Island Peak, Cholatse, Kanchenjunga, and many others are seen during the journey. Likewise, the acclimatization hike to the Hotel Everest View and Nangkartshang Peak or Chhukung Valley also offers insane mountain vistas and sunrises.

Lobuche East Peak or Lobuche West Peak, what's the difference?

There are two summits of Lobuche Peak- Lobuche East (6,119 m/20,075 ft) and Lobuche West (6,145 m/20,161 ft). Lobuche East is a trekking peak with few to no technical challenges.

However, Lobuche West requires an expedition permit and a long base camp and high camp stay. Likewise, the technical challenges are also high on the way to the Lobuche West summit.

There is a huge distance between both summits, a deep notch ridge, and a steep slope. You will climb Lobuche East Peak on this trip, which is best for those who want to step into mountaineering and gradually build their climbing skills.

Climbing gear used during the Lobuche Peak

Our guide and support crew will safeguard the climbing route with fixed ropes. The climbers will use ropes to climb up and down the peak. In addition to that, we will use crampons, helmets, harnesses, carabiners, and ice axes.

Do not worry; the team leader will provide you with pre-climbing training and teach you how to use these climbing gears. Likewise, he will also teach you how to walk on snow and some climbing terms that you will be using during the summit push.

Lobuche East Peak High Camp to summit

The final stretch of the journey involves climbing from Lobuche East Peak High Camp to Lobuche East Peak Summit. We will leave the high camp around 2:00 AM and follow our guide's lead. The snowy ridges get steeper as we get close to the summit, and the final ascent involves a 45° slope.

Lobuche Peak climbing difficulty

Lobuche Peak climbing difficulty is graded PD+. It is not a technical mountain but physically very demanding. Previous high-altitude trekking experiences such as Three High Passes, Annapurna Circuit, and Manaslu Circuit are important.

It is a trekking peak, so beginner climbers can do Lobuche Peak climbing, but they have to be fit and strong. The expedition involves multiple days of hiking through Sherpa villages. You will trek for 7 days to reach Lobuche village.

Every day, you will walk 6 to 7 hours on average. The trail is not flat and rather ascends and descends throughout the way, which makes the hike challenging.

From Lobuche village, you will climb to Lobuche East Peak Base Camp and then to the Lobuche East Peak High Camp before reaching the summit.

Throughout your time in the mountains, you will experience diverse climates and temperatures. High altitude also adds more challenge to the journey because the oxygen level gradually depletes.

Climbers have to adjust to the changing environment and also expect the limitations of the Himalayas.

How to prepare for Lobuche Peak climbing?

Though there are little to no technical challenges in Lobuche Peak climbing, the physical demands are very intense. Climbers have to honestly assess their fitness and experience and make a plan to prepare for the trip.

You can talk to us and share where you stand physically and mentally for Lobuche Peak climbing. Our team will assess and see if there is any shortfall and discuss further training plans that will help you conquer Lobuche Peak.

Some of the things that will gear you up for Lobuche Peak climbing are:

  • Weight training: Your core needs to be strong to climb at high altitudes and push yourself beyond your limits. Focus on strengthening your leg and back muscles as well.
  • Stamina and endurance: Long hours of hiking and climbing are another major demand of Lobuche Peak climbing. Your stamina and endurance must be great. Combine cardio in your workout plan and stay consistent with it.
  • High altitude exposure: If possible, do some day hikes and short treks. Even if you have previous high-altitude experience, additional high-altitude exposure will always help you.
  • Climbing skills: Lobuche Peak is for completely new climbers. So, even if you don't have any climbing knowledge, it is fine. But what we recommend to our climbers is to at least see climbing videos on YouTube. It will make them mountain smart and aware of little things. If you have access to any climbing training program, you can also consider joining that. It is totally up to you.

Lobuche Peak Climbing - 14 Days Itinerary

We will leave Kathmandu at around 1:00 AM and drive to Ramechhap Airport. It will be a peaceful 4 to 5 hours drive. From Ramechhap, we will fly to Lukla, enjoying breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayan mountains during the flight.

From Lukla, we will begin trekking with our guide and porters to Phakding. Our first night in Phakding will allow us to adjust to high elevation and avoid altitude sickness. During the trek, we will descend along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing many suspension bridges and passing by rhododendron forests and small villages.

*Note: In spring and autumn, Lukla flights are operated from Ramechhap Airport, which is approximately 4 to 5 hours away from Kathmandu. Due to high air traffic during these two seasons at Kathmandu Airport, the Lukla flight has been shifted to Ramechhap Airport.

After Phakding, the next destination is Namche Bazaar. You must have heard about this town. It is the biggest Sherpa settlement and tourist hub in the Everest region. The trail ascends through pine and rhododendron forests and passes by picturesque Sherpa villages.

We will register our permits at the police check post in Monj and cross the Tenzing Hillary Suspension Bridge further on the way. The final walk of the day is steep. Namche Bazaar will welcome us with a very delightful and heartwarming atmosphere.

Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar is mandatory to reduce altitude sickness risk at further higher elevations. We acclimate by hiking high altitude and spending the night at Namche Bazaar.

Our acclimatization hike will take us to the Hotel Everest View and may include a visit to Khumjung Monastery. The best part of the hike is the stunning mountain views of Thamserku, Kongde Ri, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, etc.

After the hike, we will return to Namche Bazaar for the rest of the day. We can explore cafes, restaurants, shops, and museums in this village. Likewise, we can also see the locals doing their daily chores and mingling with fellow travelers.

We will follow a leveled path from Namche Bazaar and gradually descend to Phortse Thenga. The scenery is pretty on this route. From Phortse Thenga, the trail ascends to Tengboche village.

In this village, we will explore the biggest monastery in the Everest region. We will learn a lot about the locals and their religious beliefs. Likewise, we can see wonderful views of Mt. Everest and Mt. Ama Dablam from the monastery.

We will continue walking from Tengboche to Dingboche village, which is known as the Summer Valley of the Everest region. Locals grow most of their crops in and around this village. From Tengboche, we will first descend to the Imja Khola Valley floor via Deboche village.

The trail goes through a dense forest of rhododendrons and pine. After crossing a suspension bridge, we will hike to Pangboche village. In this village, we will explore an ancient monastery and then hike to Dingboche village via small settlements and terraced fields.

As the elevation rises every day, the risk of altitude sickness also increases. So, we take another acclimatization break in Dingboche village. The drill is the same as last time in Namche Bazaar.

We will hike to Nangkartshang Peak early in the morning and return to Dingboche village to spend the night. From the top of the peak, we will witness a gorgeous sunrise and breathtaking views of mountains such as Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, etc.

From Lobuche village, we will walk through alpine scrub and yak pastures. The trail ascends to Dughla Pass and passes memorial stones to Lobuche village. During trekking, we can see excellent views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Nuptse, Lhotse, and many other mountains.

From today, we will start climbing towards the summit of Lobuche East Peak. Leaving Lobuche village, we will begin ascending via glacial and rock trails to Lobuche East Peak Base Camp. The route then traverses steep, snowy slopes and takes us to the Lobuche East Peak High Camp.

Our crew will set up the tents and prepare warm meals. We will spend time resting and learning the further climbing route. The team leader will brief the summit plan and share some basic climbing techniques.

We will start climbing around 2:00 AM, following our guide's lead. Using fixed ropes, we will gradually ascend. On the way, we may come across some minor crevasses, depending on the weather.

The final climb involves walking on a 45-degree slope that leads to the east summit of Lobuche Peak. After relishing the views from the top, we will descend back to base camp, pack up our stuff, and return to Lobuche village.

As this day has already been so long, we will make our last push and walk down to Pheriche village to spend the night.

From Pheriche, the trail descends to a river. Across the river, we will begin ascending along the valley. The trail then descends to Pangboche village and goes past Tengboche and Phortse Thanga. After one point, you will retrace the same trail.

Today is your final walk from Namche Bazaar to Lukla. Follow the same steep route and descend through rhododendron forests. Recross the long Tenzing Hillary Suspension Bridge and pass by Monjo and Phakding village. Moving ahead from Phakding, we will follow the uphill trail to Lukla.

It is time to fly back to Kathmandu. The guide will drop you off at the hotel upon reaching Kathmandu. For the remaining day, you can rest and explore the city and windshop in Thamel. In the late evening, we will catch up and hand over your climbing certificate.

You will leave Kathmandu on this day. Our representatives will be at your service and drop you off at the international airport hassle-freely.

Essential Information

Altitude sickness and acclimatization

Altitude sickness is definitely something climbers should be aware of during Lobuche Peak climbing. High altitude leads to altitude sickness, but if you are well-acclimatized, you will not suffer from it.

Previous high-altitude exposure is a must if you want to climb Lobuche Peak or any trekking peak in the Himalayas. You can do treks for it. There are many beginner-friendly and advanced trekking options available in Nepal.

The more you get exposed to high altitude, the easier it will get for you to adjust to it and avoid altitude sickness. To help you acclimate, we have planned two acclimatization days in our Lobuche Peak climbing itinerary.

You will have a rest day in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche village. It significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness during Lobuche Peak climbing. Follow our acclimatization plan and maintain your pace while hiking, and you will be set for a successful journey.

Below, we have shared some additional advice to avoid altitude sickness during Lobuche Peak climbing:

Ascend slowly. Let your body get used to the changing climate and environment. Enjoy nature and views. Listen to your body. If you feel discomfort, share with your guide.

Some early signs of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, insomnia, vomiting, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and loss of appetite. If you see these signs, inform your guide and get first aid.
Keep yourself hydrated throughout the journey. Due to the cold climate, you may not realize and get dehydrated. So, please be mindful.

Limit caffeinated intake and do not smoke or consume alcohol while hiking. It will dehydrate your body.
Combine soups in your meals and have ginger honey tea daily. These are great to acclimate.
Eat lots of food during hiking. You need lots of energy to walk 6 hours a day and climb a mountain.

Best time to climb Lobuche Peak

There are two climbing periods in the Himalayas for trekking peaks like Lobuche- spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). You can climb Lobuche Peak in these two seasons.

The weather and climate are best, and the mountain views are crystal clear. Likewise, during trekking, you will enjoy the company of fellow trekkers.

The Lobuche Peak climbing route is stable in spring and autumn. Even though the weather remains unpredictable above Lobuche village, there are many summit windows. We stay up to date with the weather forecasts throughout the climbing period.

Winter summits are also possible, but they are much more challenging than spring and autumn because of extreme cold and snow storms. During summer/monsoon season, mountains in the Himalayas are unapproachable.

Accommodation during the expedition

During the overall trip, you will spend nights in three types of accommodation. In Kathmandu, we will book you a three-star hotel that comes with all modern amenities and an ensuite washroom.

While trekking, you will spend nights at basic lodges. The Lobuche Peak climbing package includes twin-shared rooms, so if you are a single traveler, opt for a single room while booking the trip. Single room charge is little more.

The rooms will be simple in the lodge but good enough to have a good night's sleep. The private washroom is not available everywhere, so you have to adjust to sharing it with fellow trekkers.

Likewise, you will have access to services like hot showers, WiFi, and charging in the lodges, but it will cost you a few extra bucks. These expenses are not covered in our package cost. So, kindly carry some money for personal expenses.

During the climbing duration, you will spend one night in a tent at Lobuche Peak High Camp. We will provide tents and full board service at the high camp.

Our team will set up the tents and prepare food for you. Every climber gets a separate sleeping tent and a shared washroom and kitchen/dining tents. We use sturdy alpine tents and have comfortable and warm bedding arrangements.

Meals during the Lobuche Peak climbing

We have shared our meal plan for the Lobuche Peak climbing below:

  • Kathmandu: In Kathmandu, you get complimentary breakfast from your hotel. Lunch and dinner are not included in our package, so you have to buy them yourself. There are many excellent food options in Kathmandu.
  • Trekking: During trekking, we will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food options are great from Lukla to Lobuche village. You will have options like the famous Nepali dal bhat, momo, thukpa, thenduk, chowmein, pasta, fried rice, rice with curries, chapati, Tibetan bread, burgers, porridge, soups, eggs, nonveg dishes, French fries, pizza, etc. Likewise, we also give tea/coffee and fruits (if available) every day. Some breakfast options are toast, butter, jam, oats, muesli, pancake, omelet, etc.
  • Climbing: At the Lobuche Peak High Camp, our support team will cook the meals. We will plan delicious and carbohydrate-dense food, which will provide you with ample energy to climb the mountain.
  • Drinking water: We drink boiled water provided by the tea houses/lodges along the trail. In addition to that, we can use water purification tablets for extra safety. During climbing, we will carry enough water for everyone.
  • Snacks: Climbers can purchase extra snacks by themselves during the journey. Likewise, we recommend you buy ample snacks and bars in Kathmandu because prices are high in the mountains.
  • Allergies: If you have any allergies, inform us ahead of time and be mindful when eating. Ask lodge staff not to put ingredients you are allergic to in your meals.

Communication in the mountain

WiFi is available in villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar. It costs you USD 3 to USD 5. The network may be unstable. Likewise, paid WiFi is available in Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche villages, but the network is much worse.

Due to high altitude and unstable weather, the mobile network is also not good. Trekkers can buy a local tourist sim, preferably NCELL, for the journey. Note that there is no guarantee of a good network.

We provide a satellite phone to our guide to stay in touch with us during the trip. Climbers can also bring their own satellite phone.

Extra personal expenses during the trek/climb

Our Lobuche Peak climbing package covers most of the major expenses of the trip. However, it does not include expenses like lunch and dinner in Kathmandu, tips for guide and porter, trekking/climbing clothes and gear, bar bills, travel insurance, souvenirs, etc.

Likewise, travelers have to buy international flight tickets by themselves. You will also need to budget around USD 25 for each on the mountain.

You can use this money to buy services like charging, WiFi, hot showers, and extra snacks. These personal expenses are not covered in our package cost.

Travel insurance

For any mountain climbing in Nepal, travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation and medical bills is mandatory. Climbing involves risks like avalanches and altitude sickness.

You may get hurt, or the weather may change suddenly. All of these factors, in extreme cases, demand quick air evacuation. So, it is important that climbers are backed up by travel insurance.

Please make sure your insurance covers rescue up to 6,000 meters for Lobuche Peak climbing. Bring the insurance documents with you and give them to us. We will use it to arrange prompt evacuation in an emergency.

Climbing guide and porter

A local, licensed, experienced climbing guide will accompany you during the Lobuche Peak climbing. He will trek with us and also help you reach the summit of Lobuche Peak safely.

Likewise, we assign one porter for two travelers, and the combined weight for both travelers he carries is 18 kg. During climbing, you will have an additional crew to set tents at the high camp and assist you on the summit push.

Our climbing guides are professional mountaineers. They have numerous years of experience climbing mountains and leading hundreds of climbers to some of the tallest summits in the Himalayas, including Lobuche Peak.

We guarantee you a safe Lobuche Peak climbing!

Tips for guide and porter

Guide and porters play a huge role in making extreme adventures like Lobuche Peak climbing safe and possible. Their contribution is immense, and we cannot overlook it.

So, we highly encourage our guests to tip them after the journey ends. It will motivate them to work harder. Our Lobuche Peak climbing package does not include any tips, so please budget for it.

Passport and visa info

All non-Nepali citizens must have a valid passport of six months to join Lobuche Peak climbing. Likewise, except Indians, all non-Nepali travelers entering Nepal for Lobuche Peak climbing or any trip must obtain a travel visa.

Travelers from many countries are eligible for an on-arrival visa at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Please check the official Nepal Tourist Visa page for more details.

Note that travelers from some countries are not eligible for an on-arrival visa, so they have to obtain one from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in their country. So, make sure to read the official Nepal tourist visa page and prepare accordingly.
